The Shelby County Historical Society’s annual Fall Dinner is coming up on Thursday, November 16th at 6:00 pm. This year’s event will feature Stephanie Holman, a professional storyteller, as she presents, “Safe and Sound. Letter to Follow. Stories of Hoosiers at Home and War during WWII.” The title for the piece derives from a two-line telegraph that Holman found in the archives of the Indiana Historical Society, which was sent from a Franklin, Indiana soldier to his family after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Several years ago, IHS gave Holman the task of sifting through the countless WWII documents in their archives to create a captivating storytelling piece that would help audiences to better understand the life of Hoosiers at home and on the front lines during WWII.
“This storytelling performance presents a fascinating mix of humor and fear revealed in those writings,” Holman said. “Stories of military life dominate the narrative, from trials in training to close calls in battle, but they also show the soldiers yearning to stay in touch with home by their questions about crops and classmates and a sister’s promising romance.”
To accompany the stories, Holman includes several photos from the IHS archives.
The event, which is open to the public, serves as a fundraiser for the Historical Society and Grover Museum. Tickets can be purchased at the museum Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10 – 5 and are $12 for Shelby County Historical Society members and $15 for non-members. Due to limited tickets, the public is encouraged to call the museum to reserve tickets if they are unable to stop at the museum. The dinner is being catered by Janet Compton, SCHS board member, and will include ham, cheesy potatoes, green beans, salad, cooked apples, rolls and dessert. A vegetarian dish will also be available.
